In 2007 God started to speak to us (Doxa Deo Port Elizabeth) through scripture in Ezekiel 17: 22 – 23:
“This is what the sovereign Lord says: “I myself will take a shoot from the very top of a cedar and plant it; I will break off a tender sprig from its topmost shoots and plant it on a high and lofty mountain. On the mountain heights of Israel I will plant it; it will produce branches and bear fruit and become a splendid cedar. Birds of every kind will nest in it; they will find shelter in the shade of its branches.”
We realized that God emphasized the fact the He wanted “many birds of different kinds” to come live in this Tree referred to in Ezekiel. The tree represents Christ and the birds are the different kinds of people that would come find life in this tree (Christ).
A few years ago I was introduced to the concept and Greek word “ARTUO” which means: “to arrange and to bring order”. It has been a passion for me, since 2001, to use the Arts to bring God’s order (His thought patterns and revelation of “life”) to people’s lives.
In our journey over the past eight years in Port Elizabeth we connected with many people involved in the Arts - musicians at the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University, NMMU Choir, NMMU Music Students, the East Cape Philharmonic Orchestra, as well as musicians in many other circles of community. We also connected with artists in other art forms, with influence in Port Elizabeth. It was in this time that Arts Productions, on a regular basis, also became part of who we are as Doxa Deo in Port Elizabeth.
In this time the Artuo concept - bringing God’s order through the revelation of Christ - became all the more part of our passion and dream. God had a way of connecting us with people in need for this over and over again. It was clearly no co-incidence!
We started to realize that God has been speaking to us on two levels:
a) to reach (“to Artuo”) the sphere of the arts in Port Elizabeth in a more definite and tangible way;
b) to reach (“to Artuo”) people that desires truth and an authentic relationship with God, and for Christ to be the centre of their lives.
In the beginning of 2010 our facility in the Richmond Hill area became available. As we went into the place to have a look at it, Braam Botha and I had a divine moment, experiencing that all that was stirring in our hearts for the past three years, came together like the loose pieces of a puzzle. We knew that we had to establish the next step of the expression of the Ezekiel 17 word: reaching different people in a different setting.
The beginning of 2011 we started out at this building doing various Arts productions during this year, with great influence and impact on the sphere of the arts. The involvement of artists from all over the city increased as well, and Artuo became a platform to communicate our word, the Mandate of the Arts, to a wider circle of the community.
At the end of 2011 the Artuo dream became so evident that a group of people started to come together on Sunday afternoons to hear what God was saying what the next step would be.
In February 2012 this group of people set a date to begin with a ministry on Sunday mornings that would focus on reaching the above mentioned people. This meeting would take on the form of a Street Cafe Ministry as from now on.
Necessary changes to the building at Artuo were made during February, to launch and enhance the beginning of this dream in March. On 4 March of this year we had our first Sunday morning meeting. At the beginning of the year all the Arts production dates were set out for 2012 as well. The Street Cafe Ministry and the Arts productions had life-changing impact on our city and its people during the past five months.
Celebrate with us that Doxa Deo is seeing God’s order being established in a new way in many people’s lives through our word.
